Introduction
In the realm of personal adventures, my recent sojourn to Poland for the “Making Polish History Come Alive” Game Director Training event truly stands out. With the lush landscape of Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska as our backdrop, the melding of history, role-playing, and camaraderie made this trip an unforgettable chapter in my life’s journey.

Arrival & First Impressions

Stepping into the Resort Jura, located in the picturesque town of Kroczyce in Silesia, the ambiance was immediately inviting. With the faint aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from the bakery downstairs, it hinted at the delicious meals to come. But the main course, so to speak, was the group of 25 individuals who had gathered for this experience.
They hailed from diverse backgrounds – Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, and Spain. Yet, there was an immediate bond. Perhaps it was our shared love for history, or the anticipation of the week’s activities. Whatever the reason, it felt like we had known each other for years.
Walking Through Time
One of the trip’s highlights was undoubtedly the historical tours. As we walked through ancient Polish castles, the air seemed thick with tales of yore. Each stone, each rampart whispered secrets of the Polish Golden Age, from the might of the winged hussars to the brilliance of Nicolaus Copernicus.

The landscape, punctuated with ruins and relics, transported us back to a time when the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was a major European powerhouse. The tales of Polish forces conquering Moscow and the rich cultural renaissance that marked the period seemed to come alive with every step.
Taste of Poland
When it comes to gastronomy, Poland did not disappoint. From hearty breakfasts at the resort to traditional meals at local diners, every dish was a delightful revelation. Perogies, bigos (hunter’s stew), and barszcz (beet soup) quickly became group favorites. And of course, no evening was complete without indulging in a bit of the local spirit. Let’s just say that Polish vodka, both smooth and affordable, led to many a cheerful toast!
A Glimpse of the Unexpected
The trip had its fair share of surprises too. Few of us expected to witness the Błędów Desert, often dubbed the “Polish Sahara.” Spanning over 32 square kilometers, it’s the largest desert in Central Europe and a stark contrast to the green landscapes we’d become accustomed to.

Equally thrilling were our spelunking adventures. Exploring caves, some of which were believed to have been inhabited during the Middle Ages, was both eerie and exhilarating.

Memories to Cherish
The workshops and role-playing sessions were, of course, central to our trip. We delved deep into the intricacies of the Runestones system and worked together to craft narratives set against the backdrop of Renaissance Poland. Yet, amidst all the learning and brainstorming, what truly made this trip special were the bonds formed.
Late-night discussions, impromptu singing sessions, group hikes to nearby locations, and the collective gasps of wonder as we explored historical sites – these are the memories I’ll cherish.
The Coronation of Pope Bat-Plushie
If someone had told me that a bat-plushie would become a significant icon of our trip, I might have chuckled. But as fate would have it, this cuddly toy, playfully named ‘Batty’, not only stole our hearts but was humorously and ceremoniously crowned the ‘Pope of our Trip’. His ‘divine powers’ extended to absorbing the internet, and it wasn’t rare to see participants playfully bowing or seeking ‘blessings’ from our plush pontiff.

This became one of the running jokes, with Batty making appearances in photos, role-play sessions, and even at meals. His ‘papal decrees’ were taken with a pinch of salt and a lot of laughter, making for many unforgettable moments.
Muffin Time Madness

In between history lessons and exploration, there was “Muffin Time” – a quirky, fast-paced card game that quickly became our go-to for group entertainment. The randomness and absurdity of the game, combined with our diverse group, made for explosive laughter and bewildering scenarios.
It wasn’t just about playing cards. It was the camaraderie, the playful banter, and the myriad strategies (and sabotages!) that made each session memorable. And as the days went by, “Do you want to play a game of Muffin Time?” became an almost ritualistic chant, signaling the start of another round of fun.

Cultural Exchange – More than Just a Phrase
With participants hailing from various corners of Europe, our evenings often turned into vibrant cultural exchange sessions. From traditional songs to folktales, and even a few dance moves, the group gleefully embraced the opportunity to share and learn.
One particularly memorable evening was when we decided to educate each other about our national traditions. From the passionate tarantella of Italy to the solemn melodies of Estonia, and the hearty beer songs of Germany to the rhythmic dances of Spain – our little group became a melting pot of European cultures. It was a heartwarming experience, a testament to the power of travel and open-mindedness in bridging cultural divides.
Natural Wonders and Local Life
Poland’s unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance was evident at every turn. Our excursions into the heart of medieval Poland took us through awe-inspiring landscapes that still echoed with tales of knights, nobility, and intrigue. But it was perhaps our immersion into local life that added a vividness to our understanding.
From observing local craftsmen at work to engaging with residents who generously shared stories of their ancestors, we felt the pulse of Poland. The bustling marketplaces, the cobbled streets, and the enchanting folklore all interwoven with modernity made for an intriguing tapestry.

Learning and Bonding Through Play
Although the trip’s primary purpose was the Game Director Training, it was clear that the lines between work and play were beautifully blurred. With every historical site visited, a new game narrative was inspired. As we delved deeper into Renaissance Poland’s intricacies, our role-playing sessions became increasingly immersive.
And amid this melding of work and fun, our understanding of each other deepened. We learned not just about history or game directing but about patience, collaboration, and respect. The bonds forged over those seven days felt akin to those formed over years.
The Farewell
All good things, they say, must come to an end. And as our week in Poland neared its conclusion, a bittersweet feeling permeated the group. Our last evening was marked by a grand feast, celebrating not just our achievements but the journey itself.
As we sat around, reminiscing and laughing over shared memories – from Batty’s ‘papal reign’ to the epic “Muffin Time” sessions – there was a unanimous feeling of gratitude. While we all came as strangers, we were leaving as a close-knit family.
The morning of departure was filled with hugs, promises of reunions, and a few tears. With heavy hearts but enriched souls, we bid farewell to Poland and to each other, hoping our paths would cross again.

Epilogue: Memories Carved in Time
Looking back, this trip wasn’t just about understanding Polish history or honing our game-directing skills. It was a testament to the magic that happens when diverse individuals come together with open hearts and minds. It was a reminder of the joy of discovery, the warmth of shared laughter, and the immeasurable value of friendships forged on the road.
To Poland, to the fantastic group of 25, and to every adventure that awaits
– Na zdrowie!
